City Hall

The City Hall rises up on the edge of Lake Malaren overlooking Gamla Stan. Begun in 1911 and completed in 1923 it was built to appear far older. Although the Italian Renaissance influenced the archetiture, the interior mosaics and frescos are a delightful blend of National Romantic or art nouveau. It is here in the great blue hall that about 1,200 people are seated for the Nobel Awards banquet. Two hundred and fifty students are given tickets through a lottery and may attend.

Like all the city halls we have seen, this one is a huge statement of power, influence and nationalism and international competition. The delightful young guide did not fail to mention the height of the tower and how it is sx number of meters higher than any other in Scandanavia.
