Outside the National Museum

For such a young reborn country (Lithuania is only 20 year out from under the USSR) they have compiled absolutely unparalleled museums of their history–an archeological museum, a national history museum and the Museum of Genocide Victims in the former KGB headquarters. We had a moving conversation with a docent from the National Museum after we asked her about the significance of a case of gold rings and other small gold objects. After she verified that WE had indeed inquired of her, she explained that the citizens had given their personal treasures to subsidize the resistance effort. The exhibited items were among those that remained unutilized but identified by the contributors. She told us about her personal experience as a 40 year old when the Soviets brought in the tanks and tried to subdue the breakaway Lithuanian government
