Souk Dabbaghine–Tanner’s Quarter
Each morning the tanning pits where leather is dyed are filled with intense hues of crimson, purple, yellow and orange. Today’s tanners learned their craft from their fathers and grandfathers, practice in much the same way as the ancients and confine the craft to their own family members. Islam views tanning as an “unclean” activity but these tanneries are located deep in the center of the medina surrounded by the tanner’s dwellings.
