The Tobacco Mill

Twisted or “spun” tobacco was manufactured at a long spinning table. Using a handboard the tobacco spinner shaped a string of trimmed tobacco rolled in whole leaves. After fastening a string to the spinning wheel at the end of the table, it was twisted to achieve the desired tension. These ropes were bundled and twisted and then cut into smaller sections for sale. The device for cutting off suitable pieces of spun tobacco intended for pipe smokers along with saucing to flavor the tobacco and all the other materials and manufacturing tools required in this trade are there to be viewed.
