The Tobacco Mill
Twisted or “spun” tobacco was manufactured at a long spinning table. Using a handboard the tobacco spinner shaped a string of trimmed tobacco rolled in whole leaves. After fastening a string to the spinning wheel at the end of the table, it was twisted to achieve the desired tension. These ropes were bundled and twisted and then cut into smaller sections for sale.
